Dubai Police find woman’s bag with $20,000 and gold just before her flight

A bag stuffed with cash, gold, and personal effects nearly slipped away from its owner for good, until Dubai Police tracked her down moments before she left the country.

The recovery operation began when a staff member at Terminal 1 of Dubai International Airport spotted an unattended black bag in an open part of the terminal and turned it in to authorities. An inspection of what was inside revealed $20,000, 150 grams of gold, additional foreign currencies, several mobile phones from different manufacturers, and identification papers belonging to the owner.

Identifying the woman proved straightforward thanks to those documents, but reaching her was another matter. No lost-property report matching the bag had been filed, so officers assembled a team to retrace her steps and pin down her whereabouts. That effort revealed she was an Arab traveller preparing to board a flight to Saudi Arabia.

According to police, the woman had been anxious about the loss, uncertain about what to do next and worried she would miss her departure. Officers returned the bag to her only after she presented the necessary permits and paperwork and the required legal steps were completed.

Such fast recoveries have become a pattern for the force. Earlier in the month, officers traced a handbag containing silver bars valued at roughly AED 2 million back to an Asian passenger following a search at Terminal 1. On April 22, a tourist who misplaced his passport and iPhone near Dubai Frame had both items back in hand within hours.

The figures behind these cases are substantial. Across Dubai’s police stations and authorised drop-off points such as shopping centres and Smart Police Stations, residents filed 159,962 reports of lost belongings, with the authority also relying on additional modern channels to streamline reporting and hand-ins.
