Malacañang backs arrest of Jay Sonza, calls it a stand against fake news

The arrest of former broadcaster Jay Sonza has drawn a swift response from Malacañang’s communications arm, which emphasized the government’s intensified campaign against online misinformation.

According to Presidential Communications Office, the filing of charges and subsequent arrest carried out by the National Bureau of Investigation underscores a broader effort to address the spread of false claims, particularly those involving the health condition of Ferdinand Marcos Jr..

“It shows the government’s continuing effort to guard the truth, protect the public from deception, and preserve a free but responsible democratic space,” said Acting Secretary Dave Gomez.

The agency noted that coordination with law enforcement bodies and digital platforms will continue as part of its ongoing operations targeting disinformation networks.

“We will continue to work with law enforcement, the media, and responsible online platforms to identify, investigate, and prosecute those who disseminate falsehoods,” Gomez added.

Officials also pointed to an existing initiative aimed at curbing fabricated narratives online, warning individuals who deliberately circulate misleading content that they may face legal consequences.

“Public discourse must remain free, but it must also be truthful, fair, and orderly. Speak freely, but not falsely,” Gomez noted.
