Two Filipino household workers lost their lives at the hands of their employer during a hostage incident in Beirut, Lebanon on April 15, and the Philippine government has mobilized support for the victims’ bereaved families.
The Department of Migrant Workers confirmed that both victims had been working as household service workers at the same residence when they were fatally shot. The employer has since been arrested and remains in police custody as authorities prepare formal charges.
DMW Undersecretaries Bernard P. Olalia and Felicitas Q. Bay are visiting the families of the slain workers today, acting on the directive of Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac. The visit is intended to deliver condolences in person and inform the families of the assistance available to them from the government.
Repatriation support and access to benefits are among the forms of assistance being made available to the families. The Migrant Workers Office is working alongside the Philippine Embassy in Lebanon to push for a full investigation and the filing of appropriate charges against the suspect.
The MWO and the embassy have been in close coordination with Lebanese authorities to monitor developments in the case and ensure accountability for the killings.
