Russia will halt military operations in Ukraine for roughly 30 hours over the Orthodox Easter weekend, the Kremlin announced Thursday, with the truce set to begin at 4pm Moscow time on Saturday, April 11, and run through the end of Sunday, April 12.
The decision was framed as a directive from Putin in his capacity as supreme commander-in-chief. “By the decision of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief… V.V. Putin, in connection with the approaching Orthodox feast of Easter (the Resurrection of Christ), a ceasefire is declared from 16:00 (13:00 GMT) on 11 April until the end of the day on 12 April 2026,” the Kremlin’s statement read.
The announcement came after Ukraine had already put forward its own proposal for a halt in fighting, making the Russian move a parallel gesture rather than a unilateral initiative.
