Marcos marks Good Friday with call for compassion and humility

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. issued a reflection on Good Friday, calling on Filipinos — particularly Catholic believers — to deepen their faith and extend compassion toward others during one of Christianity’s most solemn observances.

In a social media post, the President drew on the symbolism of the Cross as a moment for stillness and gratitude. “Today, we stand before the Cross. In silence, in reflection, in gratitude. For in it, we see a love that did not turn away from suffering, but chose to embrace it for each one of us,” he wrote.

Good Friday marks the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ at Calvary, observed by Catholics and other Christians as a day of mourning and spiritual reflection ahead of the Easter Sunday resurrection.

Marcos closed his message with a direct appeal: “May this day call us to live with greater faith, humility and compassion.”

Across the country, the faithful traditionally mark the occasion through confession, the Stations of the Cross, veneration of the cross, and attendance at the Liturgy of the Lord’s Passion. Many parishes also hold readings of the Seven Last Words — the final utterances attributed to Christ before his death — as a centerpiece of the day’s observances.
