Sara Duterte marks Eid al-Fitr with message of peace, unity

Vice President Sara Duterte extended her greetings to Filipino Muslims and the global Muslim community as they prepare to observe Eid al-Fitr on March 21, delivering a video message that touched on themes of peace, collective responsibility, and gratitude.

The Bangsamoro Grand Mufti had earlier confirmed the holiday date after the crescent moon, or hilal, was not sighted, pushing the celebration to Friday.

In her message, Duterte called on the spirit of the season to drive broader action toward global harmony.

“As we celebrate this time of joy and thanksgiving, we also offer a fervent prayer for peace across the world. May the lessons of Ramadan inspire us to work together toward a global community that is inclusive, safe, and anchored in the pursuit of the common good,” she said.

She also addressed Filipinos directly, recognizing what she described as the enduring contribution of ordinary citizens to the nation.

“To my fellow Filipinos, your resilience and hard work continue to be a source of pride for our nation,” Duterte said. “May the spirit of Eid bring you comfort and remind you that your contributions to your families and our country are deeply valued.”

The Vice President closed with a personal blessing for Filipino Muslim households. “May your homes be filled with peace, and may your hearts be filled with the light of Allah’s blessings,” she added.

Duterte characterized Ramadan as a period defined by prayer, sacrifice, and reflection — virtues she said should carry forward beyond the holy month.
