A 48-hour playwriting challenge and a MacBook Air giveaway are among the highlights greeting visitors at the opening of Big Bad Wolf Books’ 2026 Dubai edition, now underway at the Sound Stage in Dubai Studio City.
The large-scale book sale, which runs until March 8, has brought together more than one million titles in a warehouse-style setup designed for open browsing. Admission is free, and book prices begin at AED 2, with markdowns reaching as high as 95 per cent. The 11-day event is being held in collaboration with the Sharjah Book Authority and the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority.
This year’s edition carries the theme “Beyond the Noise,” positioning the sale as a setting for focused reading in an era dominated by digital distractions. Organisers describe the concept as an invitation for families and individuals to spend time with physical books in a shared space that encourages slower, more intentional engagement.
Andrew Yap, Co-founder of Big Bad Wolf Books, addressed guests during the launch. “We are proud to return to Dubai once again. ‘Beyond the Noise’ reflects what many people are feeling today: the need to slow down and reconnect with something deeper. Inside this venue, scrolling slows down and understanding begins. When access becomes easy and affordable, reading stops being an occasional purchase and becomes a sustainable family habit.”
The sale spans a broad range of categories, including fiction and non-fiction, children’s titles, cookbooks, educational materials, and self-improvement books. The open-layout format allows visitors to move freely across sections and discover titles across multiple genres under one roof.
In line with its literacy-driven focus, the organisers are extending an extra five per cent discount to students and educators on all English-language books sold by Big Bad Wolf Books. The offer requires only the presentation of a valid identification card at checkout and does not impose a minimum spending requirement.
Timed during the holy month of Ramadan, the event is also being promoted as a family-friendly destination for reflection and shared learning. Dedicated children’s sections, activity corners, and interactive workshops form part of the on-site programming. A designated food truck area enables guests to break their fast with Iftar or enjoy refreshments while remaining at the venue for extended visits.
A creative component, titled STAGE WRITE 2026, is scheduled for February 28 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants will register on-site, draw random prompts for characters and situations, and complete an original 10-minute script within 48 hours. The selected winner will receive an AED 500 voucher and see their work adapted for live performance at X Fest 2026 in partnership with The Junction.
Shoppers can also join raffle draws throughout the sale period. A single receipt worth AED 200 qualifies for one entry into a prize pool that includes a MacBook Air, while higher spending amounts correspond to additional chances. Separate vouchers valued at AED 1,000 are also up for grabs, with mechanics published on the organisation’s official social media platforms.
The Dubai edition operates daily from 10 a.m. until 2 a.m., accommodating both daytime visitors and late-night crowds. Founded in Malaysia in 2009 by BookXcess co-founders Andrew Yap and Jacqueline Ng, Big Bad Wolf Books has expanded its touring sale to more than 55 cities across 17 countries, offering steeply discounted titles as part of its international reading advocacy efforts.
