UAE-based Filipino artist turns passion project into a growing advocacy

Three years ago, the story was about survival. Today, it is about purpose.

Bryan Jay Glorioso Espiritu no longer measures success by how many shoes he customizes or how detailed a portrait turns out. The 40-year-old Filipino customization specialist, based in Abu Dhabi and working with Sand & Sands Sports LLC, now sees his art as something larger than craft — it is advocacy, testimony, and responsibility.

When The Global Filipino Magazine first featured him, Bryan was building momentum in the sneaker customization scene after transitioning from tattoo artistry in 2013. He was known for hyper-detailed portraits on Nike silhouettes at Yas Mall, collaborating closely with clients and layering premium leather paints with painstaking precision. But behind the growing recognition was a quieter reality.

“Three years ago, I was an artist driven by survival, faith, and a quiet hope that consistency would one day open doors,” he says. “I came from humble beginnings, carrying the heart of an underdog and trusting God even when progress felt unseen.”

Looking back, he doesn’t dismiss that earlier version of himself. He honors it.

“Looking back, I see courage in that version of myself.”

What has shifted most is not his technical ability, but his reason for creating.

“What has changed most is my sense of purpose. Today, I create with the understanding that my journey can serve as encouragement, especially for young people who are still finding their way.”

From customization to calling

In the past few years, Bryan’s portfolio expanded beyond celebrity-inspired designs. He painted tributes to icons like Cristiano Ronaldo and Travis Scott, and took on complex portrait commissions that tested his patience and skill. But the milestone that reshaped his direction wasn’t a commercial project.

“One of the most meaningful milestones has been seeing Art In Every Step grow into an advocacy that resonates across cultures and borders,” he says.

Art In Every Step began as a simple idea: collect used sneakers, restore them, add hand-painted designs, and donate them to less fortunate children in the Philippines. It was practical, personal, and rooted in his own journey as an overseas Filipino worker.

“I am deeply grateful to God for opening doors I once only prayed for and for guiding me through seasons of uncertainty,” he reflects. “As my work reached international audiences, I remained grounded in my Filipino identity.”

For Bryan, staying grounded is not branding. It is alignment. Even as his work reached wider platforms, he says his focus shifted inward — toward heritage, service, and meaning.

“At the same time, my journey has opened space for new creative directions—projects rooted in heritage, community, and shared stories—works I am intentionally building toward and excited to share in the future.”

Listening before painting

Working as a customization specialist taught him something unexpected: humility.

“Customization taught me the value of listening and service,” he explains. “Every piece carries a story, and my role is to honor that story with care and intention.”

In the early years, the excitement came from simply being given a chance to create. Today, he chooses projects differently.

“When I was starting out, I was grateful for any chance to create. Today, I’m most excited by projects that align with advocacy, faith, and cultural storytelling.”

He is drawn to work that reflects identity and resilience — themes that mirror both his personal growth and the Filipino experience abroad.

“These projects excite me because they allow art to become a platform for inspiration, healing, and connection.”

That shift has also reshaped his confidence. It no longer depends on applause.

“This process strengthened my confidence, not through recognition, but through purpose,” he says. “It reinforced the heart of Art In Every Step: that art should walk alongside people, reflect their struggles and victories, and remind them—especially the youth—that their journey has meaning.”

Faith as foundation

Bryan’s language remains consistent: faith first, talent second. He does not separate creativity from belief. In fact, he frames his entire evolution through it.

If asked to summarize his current mindset, he doesn’t hesitate.

“I create with faith and intention through Art In Every Step, trusting that every step of the journey—seen or unseen—is guided by God and can be used to inspire hope, preserve culture, and encourage young people to believe in the value of their own stories.”

It echoes the reflection he often returns to: “Every humble step, every quiet struggle, carries a story whispered by faith , proof that even the smallest journey can leave footprints of hope.”

Three years later, Bryan is still painting sneakers. He is still layering colors carefully and drying each coat before applying the next. But the man behind the brush has matured.

He is no longer just proving he belongs in the industry.

He is building something that walks beyond it.
