Alex Eala will face her biggest challenge yet in the WTA 1000 Dubai Tennis Championships as she takes on world No. 8 Jasmine Paolini of Italy in the second round on Tuesday, Feb. 17, in the United Arab Emirates.
Coming off a first-round victory over American Hailey Baptiste, the 20-year-old Filipina enters the Round of 32 looking to continue her strong run in Dubai against a higher-ranked opponent who received an opening-round bye.
It will be the first professional meeting between Eala and Paolini, with the Italian widely expected to be the favorite based on her experience and track record on tour.
“I’m happy to be in the next round. These tournaments are such a great experience for me, especially playing in front of the best crowd ever,” Eala said.
“I really doing my best to try [and] enjoy every moment I have on court. Everyone, Mabuhay, maraming salamat sa suporta at magkita tayo sa next round,” she added.
Paolini enters the match with a decorated resume, having won three singles titles and 10 doubles championships in her career. She also captured the French Open doubles crown last year with fellow Italian Sara Errani.
The 2024 season marked a standout campaign for the Castelnuovo di Garfagnana native, highlighted by runner-up finishes at the French Open and Wimbledon, along with an Olympic gold medal at the Paris Games.
While Paolini holds the advantage across most statistical categories, Eala has shown competitiveness in areas such as first serve percentage and service games played, giving her a possible opening in the matchup.
Eala advanced after Baptiste retired during their center-court clash. Baptiste appeared to suffer an abdominal injury that required attention from medical personnel before she eventually ended the match despite winning the opening game of the second set.
Eala currently sits at No. 40 in the world rankings and has continued to build momentum since winning her first WTA 125 title at the Guadalajara Open in Mexico last September.
She has also gained recognition for her breakthrough showing at the Miami Open, where she scored notable wins including a victory over world No. 2 Iga Swiatek of Poland.
Dubai marks Eala’s third tournament in her Middle East Swing, which began earlier this month in Abu Dhabi, where she reached the quarterfinals in singles and made the doubles semifinals with Indonesian partner Janice Tjen.
