UAE private sector employees to work two hours less daily during Ramadan

Private sector employees across the UAE will work two hours less per day during the holy month of Ramadan, following an announcement by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratization (MoHRE).

The ministry said the reduced working hours will apply nationwide to all private sector workers, regardless of their role or industry.

MoHRE explained that the adjustment is based on the executive regulations of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, which governs employment relations in the country, including provisions that mandate shorter working hours during Ramadan in recognition of the month’s religious significance.

The ministry added that the measure is intended to help employees manage their work responsibilities while also allowing time for religious observance and family commitments during the fasting period.

Companies have also been given the option to arrange work schedules in ways that fit their operational needs. MoHRE said establishments may apply flexible working systems or remote work arrangements, provided the reduced daily working hours are observed.

The ministry encouraged employers to adopt appropriate systems that sustain productivity while supporting employee well-being throughout Ramadan.

The reduced working hours during Ramadan remain an annual practice in the UAE, reflecting the country’s cultural traditions and its approach to maintaining work-life balance during the holy month.
