Abu Dhabi tests drones to move blood samples faster between hospitals

Abu Dhabi has begun testing drone-based transport for medical diagnostics, marking a shift in how blood samples move between healthcare facilities in the emirate. The pilot links Sheikh Khalifa Medical City with the headquarters of PureLab, using autonomous aerial systems to handle daily sample transfers.

The initiative is being carried out by PureLab in partnership with Load Autonoms, a firm focused on advanced aviation technologies and drone development. The project introduces autonomous flight into routine healthcare logistics, with an emphasis on maintaining existing safety and regulatory standards.

Support for the pilot comes from the Abu Dhabi Investment Office. The collaboration was formalized during a memorandum of understanding signing at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week, organized by the Smart Autonomous Systems Council.

According to project partners, the use of drones is intended to shorten transport times for blood samples, which in turn can accelerate diagnosis and improve the overall speed of medical response. The pilot also forms part of broader efforts to modernize healthcare supply chains through automation while reducing environmental impact.

Badr Salim Sultan Al Olama, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Investment Office, said the Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industrial Park, known as SAVI, provides an integrated environment for turning emerging mobility ideas into real-world applications that directly benefit society. He added that such initiatives demonstrate how advanced systems can elevate healthcare services and reinforce Abu Dhabi’s position as a testing ground for smart mobility solutions.

PureLab chief executive Farindam Haldar said time saved in transporting blood samples directly affects patients waiting for results. He noted that combining autonomous air transport with the company’s diagnostic network not only speeds up delivery but also supports wider development across the healthcare system, while aligning innovation with environmental responsibility.

Rashid Al Mannai, chief executive of Load Autonoms, described the pilot as a practical deployment of autonomous flight in health logistics, providing faster and more sustainable transport for medical samples and supplies, and strengthening operational readiness across Abu Dhabi’s healthcare sector.
