Dr. Ma. Grace B. Estacio’s journey from the narrow streets of Tondo to achieving international acclaim in healthcare exemplifies a remarkable blend of faith, strength, and steadfast determination. Despite facing numerous challenges, her commitment to purpose has allowed her to transform her humble beginnings into a life marked by significant contributions, both in the dental field and within the communities she serves. Her story is a powerful reminder of how perseverance and compassion can lead to meaningful change.
A Daily Journey Through Manila’s Hard Edges
Every day, Ma. Grace Estacio travelled more than an hour from the narrow, crowded streets of Tondo to the halls of the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay (UERM) College of Dentistry in Sta. Mesa. With a backpack straining under the weight of thick textbooks and dental paraphernalia; mouth mirror, explorer, periodontal probe, cotton pliers, impression trays, and her ever-present dental model, she faced each morning with quiet determination.

The demands of dental school were relentless. Long commutes, early classes, and exhausting requirements tested her resolve daily. Yet heavier than the tools she carried was the knowledge that her parents’ income was barely enough to support the costly projects demanded by her course. Each requirement meant additional materials, time, and money; resources her family simply did not have. Still, Grace refused to let poverty define the limits of her future.
Growing Up With Struggle
Born the third child of Honorio S. Estacio Sr. and Lilia Bonus Estacio, Grace learned the realities of hardship early in life. Raised in a household of modest means, she understood that every dream required sacrifice sometimes painful, always persistent. Rather than discouraging her, these challenges shaped her resilience and deepened her sense of purpose.
Resourcefulness Born From Determination
When financial resources were insufficient, Grace took the initiative to find her own solutions. She reached out to her neighbors; people who shared her hardworking and humble background and requested their permission to perform the necessary dental procedures for her academic requirements.

She could not pay them.
She could offer nothing but her gratitude and a promise to do her best.
All she needed was an assistance to pay their own transportation costs to the school clinic, where she would fulfill her obligations. One by one, they agreed, their willingness reflecting the trust she had cultivated through her sincerity and humility within the community.
Poverty Was Never a Hindrance
In the face of adversity, Grace demonstrated remarkable perseverance. Each jeepney ride, late night, and creative solution contributed to a broader journey defined by determination. Her sacrifices ultimately paid off, as evidenced by her achievement in 2003 when she ranked among the Top 20 in the Dental Board Examination, a victory that showcased not only her technical abilities but also her indomitable spirit
A New Beginning: The Call From Unilever Philippines
Her board exam success opened doors she had once only imagined. Soon after passing, Grace received a job offer from Unilever Philippines in Mandaluyong. The moment felt surreal. During the oath-taking ceremony at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), she stood as living proof that perseverance can transform distant dreams into reality.
For a young woman who once struggled to afford daily transportation, the job offer was life-changing. She remembered holding the acceptance letter with trembling hands overwhelmed, grateful, and hopeful. The salary alone meant stability.
But there was something else that meant even more.
Each employee received a sack of rice.
To many, it was ordinary. To Grace, it symbolized security. It meant food on the table, fewer worries, and the reassurance that her family would get through another day.
A New Chapter Far From Home
Years later, another opportunity arrived, this time, in Bahrain. It meant leaving home, familiarity, and comfort behind. Yet Grace was no stranger to bold steps. With faith in her heart and her family’s dreams in mind, she embraced the challenge.
Bahrain gave her more than a career. It gave her a life.
Grace built both her profession and her family. She married and was blessed with two children. Even as her life flourished abroad, she never forgot the long walks, the heavy dental box, and the neighbors who once helped her complete her school requirements. Those memories remained her compass, grounding her in humility and gratitude.
Service Beyond Borders
In Bahrain, Grace considers herself successful not solely by career milestones, but by the fulfilment she gains from serving others. Driven by personal passion, continuous professional development, and meaningful patient interactions, she has built a career anchored in purpose. Through providing comprehensive dental care, educating patients on proper oral hygiene, and promoting preventive practices, she has made a tangible impact on her patients’ oral health and overall quality of life.
Grace confidently shares that her success as a dental hygienist is measured not only by professional achievements but also by the sense of fulfilment she experiences every day. This fulfilment is driven by her genuine passion for oral healthcare, her commitment to continuous professional development, and the meaningful relationships she builds with her patients.
‘’I find joy in providing comprehensive dental care, educating patients on proper hygiene practices, and encouraging preventative measures, I have been able to make a discernible impact on their oral health and overall quality of life’’.
Connecting With the Filipino Community
Grace naturally gravitated toward the Filipino community, where shared stories of sacrifice, resilience, and longing for home fostered instant connections. What began as simple involvement soon blossomed into a deep commitment to service, volunteerism, and patient-centered care. Her dedication to community service extends well beyond the dental clinic.
Outreach and Volunteerism
This dedication is further reflected in her active involvement in dental missions organized by groups such as Triskellion and the Filipino American Association of Bahrain, frequently conducted at the Philippine Embassy in Manama to provide essential healthcare services to distressed migrant workers facing significant social and economic challenges.
As head of the Community Relations Services Committee of the Filipino American Association of Bahrain (Fil Am Bahrain), she actively leads and participates in initiatives supporting local orphanages and children with disabilities, addressing the growing need for compassionate care and assistance within the community.
Grace also extends her support to the Travelers Masonic Club Bahrain and Tri Steps Lounge, partnering with them in advocacy and charity initiatives for distressed overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and Filipinos in need.
“I shared my dental expertise but also got involved in gift-giving activities, making sure those we help feel appreciated and cared for. I’m truly dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of individuals and families who are struggling, as I believe that even the smallest acts of kindness can create a big difference in our community’s overall well-being,” Grace explained.
Recognitions and Awards
Grace’s dedication did not go unnoticed. Her professional excellence has been acknowledged through multiple accolades. In 2001, she was named Employee of the Year (Most Outstanding Senior Dental Specialist Coordinator) by the American Mission Hospital Bahrain, in recognition of her leadership, effective team management, innovative practices, and commitment to patient care excellence. In 2023, she was honored by the U.S. Navy Medical and Dental Command, receiving the Shining Star Award for Patient Care during both the first and second quarters of the year
Milestone of Excellence and Service
In 2024, she reached a remarkable milestone when she was included in The Filipino Times Medical Awards, an honor bestowed upon medical professionals who demonstrate excellence not only in their field but also in volunteerism and charity work.
For Grace, the award was more than a trophy. It was a reflection of her journey, from a determined student carrying her dental kit through Tondo and Sta. Mesa to a respected healthcare professional and humanitarian recognized on an international stage.
A Legacy of Purpose
At 59, Dr. Grace Estacio carries with her a life lesson that has remained simple yet unshakeable: “When life gets tough, keep moving. Just keep moving and rise every time you fall.” It is a philosophy shaped by hardship, strengthened by perseverance, and proven by a life devoted to service.
From the bustling streets of Tondo to global acclaim, her path serves as a subtle yet impactful reminder that resilience, driven by purpose and empathy, can transform even the most challenging beginnings into enduring triumphs.
