Sara Duterte says impeachment talk is about money, not issues

Vice President Sara Duterte said she is bracing for a possible impeachment move against her, framing the talk around it as financially motivated rather than grounded in substance.

Speaking from The Hague in an interview on Monday, Jan. 19, Duterte claimed that any attempt to revive impeachment efforts would mirror earlier episodes in Congress. “As expected as well, magiging katulad lang din ‘yan noong nakaraan na ginagawang fundraising ng mga members of the House of Representatives yung pagpirma nila sa impeachment (It’s going to be what happened before, when House members would do some fundraising so they could get signatories for the impeachment complaint),” she said. She added, “It’s all about the money diyan (there).”

At present, no formal discussions are underway regarding a new impeachment complaint against the vice president. However, the idea has previously been raised by her critics, who indicated that they could pursue the matter once constitutional restrictions allow it.

The Supreme Court, in a July 2025 ruling, struck down as unconstitutional the impeachment complaint filed by the House of Representatives against Duterte in February, citing a violation of her right to due process. The court also clarified that any subsequent impeachment complaint could only be initiated starting Feb. 6, 2026.

Duterte also declined to comment on the impeachment complaint filed against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., with whom she has had a falling out despite being former political allies. “Sa ngayon, wala pa. Antayin natin ang mga susunod na mga araw kung meron akong reaction (As of now, I still don’t have any reaction. Maybe let’s wait for more days if I’ll have a reaction),” she said.
