Philippines commits $200,000 to UN emergency fund for global crisis response

The Philippines has committed $200,000 to the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) for the coming year, positioning the country as a consistent supporter of rapid humanitarian assistance amid escalating global crises.

The pledge was announced during the High-Level Pledging Event for CERF held on December 10, where the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs emphasized the fund’s function in mobilizing immediate, life-saving support for communities affected by conflict and emergencies.

Speaking at the event, Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations Enrique Manalo pointed to the country’s evolution in humanitarian financing, noting its shift from an early, limited contributor to a reliable partner in multilateral response efforts. He framed the contribution as part of the Philippines’ broader commitment to cooperative and principled international action.

“Middle-income countries such as the Philippines play a crucial role in shaping CERF’s future by driving multilateral action for those at the intersection of vulnerability, capability and resilience,” Manalo said.

He also outlined areas where CERF-backed initiatives should concentrate moving forward, including the expansion of anticipatory humanitarian action with triggers tailored to specific contexts, the diversification of funding sources through engagement with non-traditional donors and the private sector, and increased investment in financing mechanisms designed to address climate-related risks.
