Father arrested after hammer killing of two sons with disabilities in Misamis Oriental

What authorities initially encountered as a medical emergency in Gingoog City ended with the arrest of a father who admitted to killing his two adult sons inside their home in Misamis Oriental earlier this week.

Police said the 40-year-old suspect, identified as Lunecito, was taken into custody after confessing that he struck his sons multiple times with a hammer on Thursday, December 11. The victims—Arnold, 20, and his 21-year-old brother Adrian—were rushed to a hospital by emergency responders but died separately while undergoing treatment for severe head injuries.

Local officials from the Gingoog City Police Station said the two brothers had lived with lifelong physical disabilities. According to authorities, the siblings were unable to walk or speak since birth and moved by crawling inside their house due to congenital conditions.

Investigators said Lunecito admitted responsibility during questioning, telling police that he acted out of pity and described the act as a form of “mercy killing,” claiming he wanted to end what he saw as his sons’ prolonged suffering.

Following the confession, the suspect was placed under detention and is currently being monitored by police psychologists, with personnel from the city’s social welfare office also involved, according to local executives.

Images circulating after the incident showed the coffins of the two brothers, as well as one of the victims lying lifeless on a hospital bed prior to embalming.
