OFW seniors honored in Makati event as DMW announces new aid programs

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac placed the spotlight on overseas Filipino senior citizens during a special tribute held at the DMW One-Stop Aksyon Center in Makati City, describing them as central figures in the long history of Philippine migration.

Speaking before the attendees, Cacdac recalled how earlier generations of OFWs built their lives abroad during a period defined by limited technology and costly communication. He evoked memories of cassette tapes and balikbayan boxes that once served as the primary channels of affection, as well as the era when making a long-distance call meant carefully counting each second to hear a loved one’s voice.

He also underscored how many OFW grandparents managed to raise families despite prolonged periods of separation, pointing to their resilience and sense of responsibility as qualities that shaped what he called the “golden era” of migration. “Mahal na mahal po namin kayo,” he told the honorees while recognizing their decades of hard work and sacrifice for both household and country.

Cacdac further relayed the President’s directive to ensure stronger government assistance for Filipinos working or returning from overseas. He cited several measures already in place, including the Aksyon Fund for legal support and free transport services to the OFW Hospital for medical check-ups, along with other welfare initiatives.

He added that the department is preparing additional programs for launch next year, aimed specifically at long-serving migrant workers as part of the government’s continued acknowledgment of their contributions.
