A new destination dedicated entirely to Korean culture is being prepared in the UAE, as officials from Abu Dhabi and Seoul move forward with plans to create what will be known as UAE K-City. The initiative was revealed after a state visit to the Emirates by Lee Jae Myung, the newly elected President of the Republic of Korea.
Although the project is still in its early phase, both governments have agreed to explore a large-scale cultural hub that would gather K-culture, K-food, and business under one place. Its size and exact location have not yet been determined, but the site is envisioned as a central meeting point for Koreans, residents, and fans of the Korean Wave.
The announcement comes at a time when the UAE is experiencing a powerful rise in interest in South Korean films, television, music, and lifestyle products. Korean beauty brands have become highly sought after, K-pop has developed a loyal local fan base, and the popularity of K-drama-inspired concerts and events continues to climb. Dubai has welcomed several major Korean talents this year, including a full-scale K-pop festival at Global Village in November and a showcase of beloved K-drama soundtrack artists at Coca-Cola Arena in September.
Even specific titles have played a role in expanding the trend. The hit Netflix film Kpop Demon Hunters sparked renewed curiosity among UAE audiences, leading to themed gatherings such as a recent Abu Dhabi sing-along event built around its soundtrack. That celebration featured elements expected to appear in the future cultural district — from booths offering K-food and K-beauty products to live traditional dance performances.
Abu Dhabi is also preparing for another milestone, with DREAM Concert — one of the most storied K-pop festivals in the world — set to make its UAE debut later in November.
The growing appetite for Korean content has encouraged deeper cultural cooperation between the two nations. During the state visit, leaders highlighted plans to position the Emirates as a regional bridge for cultural exchange, reinforcing long-standing ties between the UAE and South Korea.
A joint declaration released after the visit emphasized the shared commitment to strengthening these links. It stated: “In the field of culture and people-to-people exchange, the two countries will engage in shared efforts to jointly develop the United Arab Emirates as a center for cultural exchange that serves to nurture connections between K-Culture and the Middle East by drawing on both the growing interest in Korean culture in the Middle East and the United Arab Emirates’ unique position as a cultural and tourism hub in the Middle East.”
The declaration added: “Both parties recognise the vital role of cultural exchange in fostering mutual understanding, promoting shared values, and strengthening people-to-people connections.”
It further noted that “the two countries agreed to continue discussions on various measures to further benefit the citizens of the Republic of Korea and the United Arab Emirates through active people-to-people exchanges.”
Beyond cultural initiatives, both sides also addressed cooperation in areas such as AI, public health, education, national defence, and energy.
