New biometric check-in machines spotted at NAIA Terminal 1 ahead of peak travel season

Newly installed biometric and automated check-in systems have appeared inside Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1, signaling a major step toward modernizing passenger processing at one of the country’s busiest international gateways. Airport personnel on-site said the equipment is already in place and will be activated soon, raising expectations that the upgrade could be operational in time for the holiday travel rush.

The systems—spotted through photos shared by Top Gear Philippines on Facebook—include facial recognition stations, automated kiosks, and self-service bag-drop counters designed to shorten queues and minimize manual checks. These technologies are similar to those used in major global hubs such as Dubai International Airport, Singapore Changi Airport, and several terminals in the United States and Europe, where facial scans can be used for check-in, immigration e-gates, and contactless boarding.

At Terminal 1, the new setup features passport-scanning kiosks, camera-equipped biometric gates, and automated bag-drop machines that allow travelers to print bag tags and send luggage directly into the system without approaching a staffed counter. Once activated, the equipment is expected to streamline passenger flow, reduce congestion, and strengthen identity verification by matching passport information with real-time biometric scans.
