Barangay clearance layouts showing officials’ photos spark laughs, criticism online

A set of barangay clearance documents featuring large, full-color photos of barangay officials has gone viral on Facebook, triggering a wave of humorous reactions and criticism from Filipinos who say the IDs look more like campaign posters and yearbook spreads than official documents.

The post shows two samples of barangay clearances where the names and pictures of the barangay chairman and council members are prominently displayed alongside the space for the applicant’s information.

“Akala ko kukuha lang ng Barangay Clearance. Bat parang hindi pa tapos yung termino, nangangampanya na sila?” the original uploader wrote, drawing thousands of reactions and shares.

Many netizens quickly jumped in, turning the comments section into a mix of satire and frustration over what appeared to be political promotion disguised as public service.

“Jusko, sa amin imbes na picture ng kung sino ang kumuha ng brgy clearance ang nakalagay eh hindi,” one user commented. “Picture ng mga brgy officials kaya nung pinasa ko nung kukuha ako ng govt documents, tinanong ako, ‘sino ka dyan sa mga yan?’ HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.”

Another commenter poked fun at the use of colored ink and paper for the officials’ photos, saying, “Sayang lng ang colored na ink.”

Some users raised concerns, arguing that public documents should not be used to highlight elected officials. “Bawal yan. Wala dapat silang mukha d’yan at hindi naman yan sa kanila,” one netizen pointed out.

Others compared the design to school memorabilia. “Pa-Yearbook man design HAHAHAHAHA,” a Facebook user wrote, while another joked, “ID & class picture.”

Comments also touched on resource use, with one saying, “Para bang sa bulsa nila galing ang papel at printer equip,” and another adding, “Yung inaaksaya nilang papel at ispasyo nagagamit sana sa maraming bagay kundi kagahaman nila.”

While the exchange has largely stayed humorous, many users echoed a shared sentiment about political branding in basic government services. One comment summed up frustration bluntly: “Epalitiko kase sila.”

As the images continue to circulate online, netizens are calling for simpler, applicant-focused barangay documents and reminding public officials that service delivery should not double as subtle campaign material.

No official response from the barangays involved has been issued as of writing.
