Abu Dhabi Police have outlined updated guidelines on how traffic points affect driving licence suspensions and revocations, particularly for young and probationary drivers, during a recent episode of their Safety and Security programme, also available on YouTube.
Lieutenant Colonel Saeed Khalfan Al Kaabi from the Traffic Points Program Department explained that motorists under 21 who accumulate 24 black points face either a six-month licence suspension or the option to recover their licence by completing a one-day rehabilitation course and paying a fine of Dh2,400.
However, he stressed that a repeat offence carries heavier consequences. “If a motorist under the age of 21 gets 24 traffic points again, then their licence will be revoked permanently,” Al Kaabi said. Those affected will only be allowed to reapply for a new licence one year after the cancellation.
For drivers above 21 with permanent licences, similar penalties apply when the 24-point threshold is reached. They may face a three-month suspension or choose to attend a one-day course and pay the Dh2,400 fine. Should they again hit the maximum points within a year, their suspension period will double to six months, along with the same course and fine requirement.
Al Kaabi also detailed the traffic points system, noting that penalties vary according to the severity of the violation. Points remain on record for one year, after which they are cleared if the total does not exceed 24 within that period. Serious infractions such as running a red light incur 12 points, while endangering lives carries 23 points.
