The Office of the Ombudsman has confirmed that Ombudsman Jesus Crispin “Boying” Remulla remains in good health and fully capable of performing his duties, following public concern over his revelation that he had battled leukemia after undergoing quintuple heart bypass surgery.
Remulla disclosed his condition in an interview with broadcaster Luchi Cruz-Valdes on her YouTube channel, where he recounted being diagnosed with bone marrow cancer during his recovery.
“When I was recovering, I was diagnosed with leukemia. I underwent cancer treatment in St. Luke’s in BGC, where I took chemotherapy, total body irradiation, and bone marrow transplant,” Remulla said, adding that one of his children was his bone marrow donor.
In a statement, the Office of the Ombudsman said Remulla has been in remission for a year and a half. It explained that his comments referred to events that took place before his appointment as Ombudsman.
“His recent statements on his health are in the past tense, because it refers to his experiences before he became Ombudsman,” the office clarified.
The OMB assured the public that Remulla remains focused and resolute in leading efforts to pursue accountability in government, particularly in cases involving flood control project irregularities.
“His second chance in life has given him the determination and resolve to not be afraid or hesitant about anything,” the statement said.
