The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) is examining whether faulty electrical wiring caused the fire that gutted the Department of Public Works and Highways’ (DPWH) Bureau of Research and Standards office in Quezon City on Wednesday.
NBI Director Jaime Santiago said investigators discovered signs of “octopus wiring” and the unsafe use of extension cords and cables in the affected area, raising the possibility that overloaded connections triggered the blaze.
He added, however, that arson has not been ruled out as a cause, and the agency continues to explore all angles.
Forensic chemists have been dispatched to inspect the scene for any traces of flammable materials, while a joint investigation with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) will determine whether negligence or an accident led to the incident.
