In a world where glass towers and steel structures dominate skylines, some designers still believe that architecture should speak to both people and nature. One of them is Franc Autentico Obguia, a 25-year-old Filipino Architectural Designer whose journey reflects creativity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to meaningful design.
Currently part of PDP+ Architecture, Franc has devoted his young career to developing commercial and mixed-use projects that put sustainability and human connection at their core. “I help develop commercial and mixed-use projects through concept creation, design visualization, architectural planning, and sustainability integration,” he shared. “Every space should serve both people and nature.”

From Cebu to the global stage
Franc’s passion for architecture began during his university days at the Cebu Institute of Technology – University, where he quickly distinguished himself through design competitions and leadership. Before joining PDP+ Architecture under the mentorship of Ar. Cathy Saldaña, he represented his school in national contests such as the Asia Young Designer Awards Philippines, the American Standard Design Awards Philippines, and Philbex Cebu, where he became a finalist.
His career reached a remarkable high point when he was honored with the Global Student Mentor Award at the 10th Inspireli Awards held at the historic Betlehem Chapel in Prague, Czech Republic—the world’s largest architectural student competition. Representing both his alma mater and the Philippines, Franc described the experience as life-changing.
“Standing on that global stage reminded me that architecture goes beyond structures—it is about empathy, sustainability, and inspiring others through design,” he said.

That recognition was not his first encounter with Inspireli. Franc had been a contestant in previous years, learning from the global community of young architects before being chosen as one of its mentors. “Competing on that global stage taught me resilience, humility, and the beauty of collaboration,” he recalled. “It’s truly humbling to now be recognized by the same platform that once encouraged me to keep believing in my craft and the power of design to make a difference.”
Building dreams rooted in purpose
For Franc, architecture is not just a profession—it’s a calling that bridges creativity and social impact. “I love that my work allows me to design with purpose—to create spaces that connect people and respect the environment,” he said. What fulfills him most is seeing his ideas materialize into spaces that make life better for others.
His time under the guidance of Ar. Buck Richnold Sia of Zubu Design Associates also played a key role in shaping his philosophy. Through mentorship and competition exposure, he learned to approach every project with empathy and intention. “Purposeful and people-centered design became my passion,” he said.
Although Franc is currently based in the Philippines, he dreams of working abroad to experience architecture from different cultural perspectives. “I want to experience architecture in a global setting, to learn from different cultures and design perspectives,” he shared. “It will help me grow as a designer and as a Filipino who hopes to bring our values and creativity to the world.”

He believes exposure to international design practices will deepen his understanding of how architecture can respond to diverse environments and communities. “Hopefully, the universe will conspire for that to happen,” he added with optimism.
Carrying the Filipino heart wherever he goes
Franc’s aspirations extend beyond personal success. His vision is to return home one day, bringing with him the knowledge and experiences gained abroad to contribute to sustainable and people-focused spaces in the Philippines. “My goal is to contribute to more sustainable, people-centered spaces in the Philippines and inspire young designers to dream beyond borders,” he said.
But even as he looks forward to global opportunities, he remains grounded in gratitude and family values. “Through it all, my family has been my greatest source of strength,” he said. “Their unwavering support keeps me grounded and inspires me to keep moving forward.”
Franc also draws strength from seeing his own siblings work overseas. “My brother and sister are also working abroad, so I’ve seen both the sacrifices and the strength it takes to be away from home,” he shared. “There will be moments of loneliness and doubt, but remember why you took that brave step. Stay true to your values, take care of your well-being, and carry the warmth of home wherever you go.”
To Filipinos carving their paths around the world, Franc offers a message of hope and integrity. “Surround yourself with good people, work with integrity, and never lose that Filipino heart that makes you both strong and kind,” he said.
