OWWA reminds OFWs: Register now to get insurance, education, and livelihood aid

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) is urging Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) to maintain active membership to access a range of benefits, including insurance, scholarships, and livelihood assistance.

In an interview, OWWA Abra Family Welfare Officer Karen Borreta detailed the various programs available to members, emphasizing that these benefits provide crucial support during times of need.

She explained that OWWA offers dismemberment and disability benefits of up to ₱100,000 for members who suffer injuries abroad. “For example, an OFW involved in an accident abroad will be assessed on the grade of disability. This is where the dismemberment and disability benefits apply,” Borreta said.

For deceased OFWs, Borreta said families can receive ₱100,000 in insurance benefits plus ₱20,000 for burial expenses. In cases of accidental death, the total assistance reaches ₱200,000.

She also highlighted the Educational and Livelihood Assistance Program (ELAP), which helps children or siblings of deceased OFWs continue their studies. “Here in Abra, there are 16 maintained ELAP scholars who are siblings or children of OFWs who passed away. Under the ELAP, the assistance continues even after the death of the OFW to ensure that the dependents will finish their studies,” she said.

Meanwhile, displaced and distressed OFWs can receive ₱20,000 through OWWA’s Balik Pinas, Balik Hanapbuhay Program to help them rebuild their livelihoods.

Borreta reminded OFWs that registration requires a valid passport, employment proof or contract, visa, and work permit. She encouraged interested individuals to visit the OWWA office located at the 2nd Floor, S&E Rosario Building, Torrijos Street, Zone 5, Barikir, Bangued, Abra.
