The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) confirmed on Monday that the number of fatalities from the magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck Bogo City, Cebu on September 30 has risen to 75.
“Sa Cebu po ay nananatiling 75 ‘yung casualty doon. Meron pa rin tayong close to 600 injuries,” OCD Deputy Administrator Assistant Secretary Bernardo Alejandro IV said in an interview with Unang Balita.
Alejandro added that officials are still verifying if the magnitude 6.0 aftershock that hit at 1:06 a.m. on Monday caused new casualties. “But titignan natin ngayon. Ngayong umaga po, pumapasok ang mga reports. Sana wala pong casualty dito sa aftershock na ito,” he said.
According to the OCD, aftershocks from the powerful quake have now reached almost 11,000 since late September.
Data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) showed that 722,919 people—or about 201,245 families—across Central Visayas were affected by the disaster. Of these, 3,538 individuals (815 families) remain in evacuation centers, while 5,280 others (1,106 families) are temporarily staying with relatives or elsewhere.
