Dubai driver fined, told to pay AED 200,000 blood money after fatal drunk-driving crash

A Dubai court has found a woman guilty of causing a deadly accident while driving under the influence of alcohol, Gulf News reported. The Dubai Court of Misdemeanour sentenced her to pay a fine of AED10,000 and AED200,000 in blood money to the family of the victim.

The Arab national had been drinking before driving along a two-way street in the Al Qudra area late at night. She lost control of her car and collided with another vehicle, which was forced into a streetlight and a parked car before hitting a third vehicle. Her car swerved again, striking three pedestrians. One of them died from serious injuries, while the other two sustained varying levels of harm.

Medical examinations confirmed that she was intoxicated at the time of the crash, a fact she admitted to police investigators. She reportedly told authorities that she was surprised to see pedestrians standing in the middle of the road.

The court held her fully responsible for the accident, citing her drunken state and negligence. However, it also pointed out that the two surviving pedestrians bore partial responsibility, as they had been standing outside designated crossing areas, endangering both themselves and others.

In addition to the fines and blood money, the woman was ordered to cover the costs of the vehicle damages resulting from the multi-car collision.
