Filipino domestic workers in Hong Kong to earn HK$5,100 monthly after wage hike

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has welcomed the decision of the Hong Kong SAR government to increase the Minimum Allowable Wage (MAW) for foreign domestic workers, including thousands of Filipinos, by 2.2 percent.

Starting September 30, 2025, newly signed contracts will reflect a monthly salary of HK$5,100 (US$655), up from the previous HK$4,990 (US$641). The food allowance, however, remains unchanged at HK$1,236 for those not given meals by their employers. Hong Kong authorities will continue accepting contracts under the old wage until October 27, 2025.

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac described the pay rise as a “positive step that affirms the dignity and rights of domestic workers,” noting that more than 190,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Hong Kong stand to benefit.

The adjustment also exceeds the Philippines’ US$500 minimum wage benchmark for domestic workers set under DMW Advisory No. 25, Series of 2025, aligning with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to safeguard the welfare of Filipinos overseas.

Still, the Department pointed out the need to revisit provisions on food allowance, stressing that it has remained stagnant despite increasing living expenses. It also reminded recruitment agencies, employers, and Filipino domestic workers to ensure contracts signed from September 30 onwards comply with the updated rate.

The Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Hong Kong has assured assistance for OFWs in enforcing these provisions and in reporting cases of non-compliance.
