Finding purpose in the classroom often begins with a spark—a teacher who dares to innovate, who sees learning not just as a process but as an opportunity to change lives. One such educator is Felipe De Leon, a 44-year-old PYP ICT Specialist Teacher at Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills, an outstanding IB school. Recently, he became one of the first Filipino educators to be awarded the UAE Golden Visa for Distinguished Educator, a recognition that highlights both his career achievements and his unwavering commitment to shaping young minds through technology and innovation.
A career built on passion and innovation

De Leon’s journey as an educator is deeply rooted in his dual identity as both a programmer and a teacher. “I am a father and educator who is passionate about cultivating a culture of innovation in schools and empowering students through technology,” he shared with TGFM. His teaching career abroad began in 2013 at the Philippine School of Dubai, where he taught ICT, and later expanded to GEMS Winchester School, a British National Curriculum institution. He then took on the role of Head of Digital Learning and Innovation at Springdales School Dubai before assuming his current post at Dubai International Academy (DIA), where he works under the International Baccalaureate framework.
His career has been marked by milestones that highlight his dedication to both his students and the wider educational community. At DIA, he serves as coach of the DIA Wolves robotics team, which achieved global recognition when they won the Project Innovation Award at the 2023 First Lego League International Competition in Brazil, proudly representing the UAE on the world stage. For his efforts, he has received several honors, including the Best Teacher of the Year Award at the Philippine School Dubai, the Promoting STEAM and Innovation Award at DIA, and the chance to represent his school as one of its best educators during Teachers’ Month at the Palace, where he had the privilege of meeting His Highness Sheikh Al Nahyan.
Beyond these achievements, De Leon continues to strengthen his qualifications. In 2024, he successfully completed the UK National Professional Qualification for Leading Teaching (NPQLT) and is currently awaiting the results of the UK NPQ in Senior Leadership (NPQSL). His academic path began in the Philippines, where he pursued his Master’s degree at the Philippine Normal University and is now completing it at Holy Angel University. “My experience has allowed me to combine technical expertise with the ability to guide and inspire learners,” he explained, emphasizing how his professional and academic growth has always been fueled by the desire to merge technology and education.
Overcoming struggles and embracing opportunities abroad
De Leon’s decision to pursue opportunities overseas was driven by his desire to bring his skills to an international stage. “I have been seeking opportunities to apply my skills in the international robotics industry, where I can contribute to advancing technology while continuing to grow as a professional in a global setting,” he said. His early years in Dubai, however, were not without obstacles. Adapting to a new culture and different education systems while holding a Philippine education background was a challenge. He recalled how entering international schools with credentials not initially aligned with global standards pushed him to upskill and persist.

“To overcome this, I focused on professional development, learning the frameworks of IB, BTEC, and NEASC, and demonstrating my ability to integrate technology and innovative teaching practices effectively,” he shared. Through resilience and hard work, he turned these initial hurdles into stepping stones that strengthened his teaching philosophy. He also credited his family, fellow educators, and mentors as an invaluable support system. “I have looked up to experienced international educators who exemplified resilience, humility, and innovation, inspiring me to navigate these challenges with confidence while staying committed to my passion for teaching and technology,” he said.
Working abroad has also been personally enriching. “It offers the opportunity to engage with diverse cultures, perspectives, and educational practices, which enrich both my personal growth and professional development,” De Leon explained. Being part of an IB World School has exposed him to holistic and inquiry-based approaches that focus not only on academic excellence but also on building lifelong learners and responsible global citizens. “The most satisfying aspect of my work is witnessing my students grow in confidence and creativity—especially when they apply their skills in real-world contexts, such as robotics competitions, and realize that their ideas have the power to make a difference,” he added.
His colleagues recognize his contributions as equally transformative. In a letter, DIA’s Head of Primary, Tom Collar, praised him: “Felipe’s curriculum design embraces technology as a dynamic force, transforming the educational experience. Through his integration of cutting-edge technology, students are challenged, and teachers are supported in creating engaging learning environments.” Collar also highlighted De Leon’s participation in international conferences, including GESS, where he presented on artificial intelligence and teaching, and the What Works conference, where he spoke about innovation through the Solar Road Project.

De Leon’s coaching has produced consistent success. Under his guidance, students excelled not only in robotics but also in digital arts and other STEAM-related competitions. His teams have bagged multiple awards, including 1st place in Dubai and 2nd place in the UAE at the Lego League, silver medals in Innovents football robotics and STEAM competitions, and gold, silver, and bronze finishes in the Innovents Art competition. “His volunteer work in driving STEAM learning, particularly in robotics, promotes diversity and inclusivity,” Collar wrote, further proving how his influence extends beyond the classroom.
Looking ahead with a vision for education
The UAE Golden Visa for Distinguished Educators is both recognition and opportunity. It provides a decade of residency for teachers who have made exceptional contributions, allowing them to sponsor family members and continue their work in the country with greater stability. For De Leon, the award is more than a milestone; it is fuel for bigger aspirations. “Once I complete my tenure abroad, I aspire to return to the Philippines and leverage the knowledge, skills, and global perspectives I have gained to help schools elevate their standards in technology and innovation,” he said. His future goals include advancing the integration of STEAM-based learning, mentoring the next generation of educators, and promoting equitable access to quality education.
In a congratulatory letter, Innoventures Education CEO Poonam acknowledged his impact: “Congratulations! I am delighted to inform you that your nomination for the Golden Visa has been approved. This recognition reflects your exceptional calibre and rich experience, which have significantly contributed to enhancing the education landscape in the UAE. I am confident that your continued role in education will greatly benefit our student community.”

De Leon also uses his story to inspire fellow Filipinos abroad. “Remain patient, resilient, and open to learning,” he advised. “Challenges—whether in love, finances, employment, or building trustworthy relationships—are inevitable, but they can be overcome by staying grounded, setting clear priorities, and seeking support from family, friends, and mentors. Remember that setbacks are opportunities for growth.”
For now, he continues to thrive at DIA, where he appreciates the resources and supportive environment that allow him to push the boundaries of education. His passion for robotics, programming, and technology is not just about machines and codes; it is about people, especially the students whose futures he helps shape. By merging his love for technology with his dedication to education, De Leon proves that teaching is not only about imparting knowledge but also about equipping learners with the skills and mindset to succeed in an ever-changing world.
