The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) has begun work on a major upgrade of Emirates Road, a Dh750 million project aimed at easing congestion and improving travel efficiency across the northern Emirates.
According to the Ministry, the two-year initiative will expand the road from three to five lanes in each direction over a 25-kilometre stretch between Al Badee Interchange and Umm Al Quwain. Once completed, the road’s capacity is expected to rise by 65 percent—accommodating around 9,000 vehicles per hour.
Authorities estimate that travel time between Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Sharjah, and Dubai could be reduced by up to 45 percent. The project also includes the construction of six directional bridges at Interchange No. 7, stretching 12.6 kilometres and designed to handle up to 13,200 vehicles per hour. An additional 3.4 kilometres of service roads will also be built on both sides of the highway.
Youssef Abdullah, Assistant Under-Secretary for the Federal Infrastructure Projects Sector at MoEI, said the upgrade represents a key step toward building “an integrated road network that meets the needs of population and economic growth.” He added that the project reflects the UAE’s commitment to sustainable and innovative solutions that reduce emissions while enhancing the quality of life for residents.
During the construction phase, the Ministry has pledged to minimise disruption for commuters through phased traffic management, alternative detours, and close coordination with local authorities. A public communication plan is also being rolled out to provide continuous updates on progress and traffic guidance.
The MoEI has urged motorists to remain alert, follow traffic instructions, and monitor its digital platforms for the latest advisories related to the project.
