Gretchen Barretto formally denies link to missing sabungeros case

Actress Gretchen Barretto appeared at the Department of Justice on Thursday to submit her counter-affidavit, directly addressing allegations that link her to the case involving the disappearance of 34 cockfighting enthusiasts, or sabungeros.

Barretto’s lawyer, Atty. Alma Mallonga, reiterated her client’s firm denial, asserting that the complaints lack substance and credibility. “As you know, we have said from the very start that the accusations against Ms. Barretto stand on nothing,” Mallonga told reporters in a brief interview.

She emphasized that even the complainant’s own affidavit acknowledged the allegations as speculative and unproven. “At the end of the day, [they’re] incredible; and the witness himself lacks credibility,” Mallonga added.

The submission coincided with the start of the preliminary investigation into one of the country’s most puzzling disappearances, which has gripped public attention and sparked calls for accountability from families of the missing men.

When approached by the media, Barretto chose not to issue any statement about the case. However, when asked if she believed the investigation would be fair, the actress answered briefly, “I trust.”

Her legal team is hopeful that the case will be resolved swiftly, with Mallonga stating that a prompt resolution is in line with the demands of justice.
