Domestic worker suffers 68% burns after rat-damaged gas pipe triggers UAE blast

A domestic worker is battling for her life after a devastating gas explosion tore through a family home in Al Safi, Ras Al Khaimah, Gulf News reported.

Authorities said the blast was caused when a rat gnawed through a kitchen gas pipe, allowing fumes to build up. The 42-year-old Asian maid, who had only been with the family for a month, was alone in the house when she unknowingly ignited the gas while entering the kitchen.

The explosion ripped apart the kitchen, shattered furniture, and shook neighboring homes. Musbah Mohammad, a 38-year-old Emirati government employee and member of the family, recalled the terrifying moment: “After Isha prayer, we heard a big blast, but we never expected it was from our own house.”

Emergency teams rushed to the scene, evacuating the house and rescuing the injured maid. She was first rushed to Fujairah Hospital with burns covering nearly her entire body before being transferred to Khalifa Hospital for further treatment. “Her injuries are now about 68 percent, and she has already undergone surgery,” Mohammad told Gulf News.

Investigators confirmed that the source of the leak was a rat-damaged gas pipe, warning that such cases highlight how pests can cause serious and even deadly household accidents.
