Man declared brain-dead shocks mourners by waking up at his own funeral

In a scene straight out of a movie, a 19-year-old Indian man stunned his grieving family and friends after he suddenly began coughing—at his own funeral.

Bhau Lachke was initially pronounced brain-dead by doctors after suffering severe injuries from a road accident, according to South China Morning Post. With little hope given by the hospital, his family began preparing his final rites.

But just as the funeral proceedings began, what was supposed to be a farewell turned into a moment of disbelief and joy. Lachke reportedly started moving and coughing, catching everyone—mourners and loved ones alike—completely off guard.

“We thought we had lost him, but this feels like a miracle. We just want him to get better,” said his relative Gangaram Shinde.

Following the shocking turn of events, Lachke was immediately rushed back to the hospital for further treatment. While he remains in critical condition and on life support, the family is hopeful.

Tensions have since escalated between the family and the hospital. The relatives claim they were misinformed by medical staff, accusing doctors of declaring Lachke brain-dead and misleading them into thinking he had no chance of survival.

However, the hospital pushed back against the allegations. “The patient was in a critical state, and we communicated his condition to the family. There was no declaration of death,” a spokesperson said, suggesting the family may have misunderstood the diagnosis.
