Vice President Sara Duterte assured overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) that her office is prepared to extend support to those who decide to return to the Philippines rather than endure mistreatment abroad.
Speaking before members of the Filipino community in Kuwait last week, Duterte emphasized the importance of dignity and self-respect in the face of inhumane working conditions. She recalled the experience of their household helper, who chose to go home after her employer failed to provide meals.
The Vice President also highlighted the importance of hearing directly from OFWs about both the hardships and positive practices they encounter overseas.
The OVP added that after her Kuwait visit, Duterte would continue working on efforts related to the detention of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. The former president faces charges of crimes against humanity linked to his controversial war on drugs.
Last month, the ICC granted the Duterte camp’s plea to suspend its ruling on his request for interim release until his legal team submits additional supporting information.
