11 OFWs in Amsterdam cry foul over ‘abusive’ work hours, poor living conditions

Eleven overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, have lodged complaints against Saints and Stars gym, accusing the company of severe labor abuses, the Philippine embassy confirmed.

According to the embassy’s statement on Saturday, the OFWs — alongside Indonesian co-workers — brought their grievances to the Netherlands Labor Authority. Six of them alleged that from May to June 2025, they endured 17-hour workdays across multiple gym branches and were forced to sleep on floors without proper bedding or heating. Their identities remain confidential due to privacy regulations.

The embassy said an inquiry with the Migrant Workers Office (MWO) in Berlin revealed that the gym is not accredited with either the MWO or the Department of Migrant Workers in Manila. It also reported that the company’s accountant has been arrested for alleged document forgery.

All 11 OFWs are now in safe condition, sheltered in Amsterdam, and receiving free legal aid from Dutch lawyers.

“The embassy has been in communication with the Filipino cleaners since early July when the case first arose,” it said, adding that it is working closely with the MWO in Berlin to extend the needed assistance.

It assured the workers that it will continue coordinating with Dutch authorities, monitoring the investigation, and pushing to ensure accountability.
