Marcos inspects Pasig-Marikina River project aimed at easing Metro Manila floods

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. on Monday visited the Pasig-Marikina River Channel Improvement Project (PMRCIP) Phase IV at the Marikina Bridge Under Loop, underscoring its role in protecting Metro Manila from severe flooding.

The initiative is designed to curb the overflow of the Pasig and Marikina rivers, a recurring cause of devastating floods in the capital region. Phase IV combines structural and non-structural interventions to lessen flood damage, enhance urban development, and promote a more sustainable riverside environment.

Key works include the construction of dikes and revetments, installation of floodgates, dredging of river channels, and other upgrades to the city’s flood management infrastructure.

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manny Bonoan said major components in Marikina City are on track for completion within the next few years.

“We are hoping na itong widening, revetment, baka matapos namin by 2028 pero ‘yung Marikina Gate Control Structure baka by 2028 or 2029 siguro,” Bonoan noted.

Once finished, the project is expected to significantly strengthen the capital’s resilience against flooding while supporting its long-term growth.
