Man missing for 28 years found perfectly preserved in melting glacier

After nearly three decades of uncertainty, the family of a man who vanished in Pakistan’s mountains finally has answers. The body of 31-year-old Nasiruddin, missing since 1997, was recently discovered as the Lady Meadows glacier in Kohistan began to melt.

Nasiruddin and his brother reportedly fled to the mountains following a village dispute. While his brother survived, Nasiruddin fell into a glacier crevasse and was never seen again — until now.

His remains, remarkably preserved and still carrying his identity card, were spotted on July 31 by a local shepherd near the glacier’s edge. He was laid to rest on Wednesday.

“Our family left no stone unturned to trace him over the years,” his nephew Malik Ubaid told AFP. “Finally, we have got some relief after the recovery of his dead body.”

The discovery comes as glaciers in the region continue to recede due to rising global temperatures. Pakistan, home to over 13,000 glaciers — the largest number outside the polar regions — is facing increasing risks from climate-driven melt.

Nasiruddin, a father of two, was lost in a tragedy that spanned generations. Now, his family finds solace in finally bringing him home.
