Pakistan to launch first international ferry service connecting to UAE and Gulf countries

In a groundbreaking move for its maritime sector, Pakistan is set to launch its first-ever international ferry service, offering a new and affordable travel alternative to the United Arab Emirates, other Gulf nations, Iran, and beyond.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs announced on Tuesday that a high-level inter-agency committee had granted an in-principle licence for ferry operations. The committee includes representatives from the Ministries of Defence, Foreign Affairs, and Interior, as well as the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation and the Directorate General Ports & Shipping.

The ministry described the development as “a new chapter in maritime travel, tourism, and regional connectivity.”

Initially, the ferry service will operate between Karachi and Gwadar, with future routes planned to connect directly with Gulf countries. At present, all commercial travel between Pakistan and the Gulf region is handled by air carriers including Emirates, Etihad Airways, flydubai, Air Arabia, PIA, Airblue, Serene Air, and Air Sial.

This new sea route aims to ease the cost of travel, particularly for Pakistani nationals working or touring the Gulf. It will also serve as an economical option for religious pilgrims heading to Saudi Arabia for Umrah and Hajj, as well as to Iran and Iraq for pilgrimages. Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry pointed out that around 700,000 to 1 million Pakistanis visit Iran and Iraq annually for religious reasons.

“If even 20 per cent choose ferries in the first three years, that would translate to 140,000 to 200,000 passengers per year, representing significant economic potential,” Chaudhry noted.

The ferry service’s launch also aligns with the region’s anticipated unified Gulf tourist visa — a Schengen-style policy that will facilitate multi-country travel within the GCC, making ferry-based tourism even more accessible.

In parallel with this development, AD Ports Group opened its first representative office in Islamabad on the same day — signalling deeper trade and logistics collaboration between the UAE and Pakistan. Positioned near key government offices, the new office is expected to be a central hub for investment and infrastructure projects.

While the operating company has not been officially confirmed, reports suggest the licence was awarded to UK-based “Sea Ferry.”
