Marcos says he has ‘little role’ in Duterte impeachment, shrugs off assassination claim

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. clarified on Wednesday that he has not been avoiding questions about Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment case but emphasized that the presidency has a limited function in such proceedings.

In an interview with India-based media outlet Firstpost during his visit to New Delhi, Marcos responded to questions about whether he supports Duterte’s ouster.

“I have not refused to comment on the impeachment process. I just said, I made it very clear, the executive, the President, has very little role to play in that process,” Marcos explained.

He also addressed the controversial claim made by Duterte during a press conference last November, in which she suggested that he could be assassinated under her orders. When asked if he believes she’s capable of doing that, Marcos answered, “I don’t know, you know, but I’m really not in the position to say about what it is about.”

While he did not dwell on the matter, the President acknowledged that receiving threats comes with the job. “You know, in my position there’s always some kind of threat and we take them all very seriously,” he said.

The Marcos-Duterte political alliance, once solidified under the “UniTeam” banner in the 2022 elections, has since unraveled following Duterte’s resignation as education secretary in 2024.
