Woman arrested after toddler found hidden inside suitcase on bus

A 27-year-old woman in New Zealand was arrested after a disturbing discovery—police say she attempted to transport a two-year-old girl inside a suitcase stowed in a bus compartment.

The shocking incident unfolded on Sunday at a bus depot in Kaiwaka, about 100 kilometers north of Auckland. A concerned bus driver noticed one of the bags moving during a scheduled stop. Upon checking, the driver found the toddler packed inside.

“When the driver opened the suitcase, they discovered the two-year-old girl,” confirmed Detective Inspector Simon Harrison.

Authorities said the child was extremely overheated but did not show any visible injuries. She was immediately taken to a hospital for a full medical evaluation.

The woman has been charged with child neglect and ill-treatment. More charges may be added as the investigation continues.

Detective Harrison praised the quick-thinking driver, noting they likely prevented “what could have been a far worse outcome.”

New Zealand’s Ministry for Children, Oranga Tamariki, has been alerted and is involved in the case.
