OWWA to OFWs: Huwag hintayin ang emergency bago magpa-member

The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has issued a strong reminder to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) about the importance of maintaining an active membership—emphasizing that preparedness, not reaction, is the key to securing their well-being abroad.

In a Facebook post published on July 31, the agency countered the common misconception that OWWA membership is unnecessary if everything is going well. The post highlights that while many OFWs might feel secure in their jobs now, it’s during emergencies—like sudden illness, job loss, or accidents—when OWWA becomes their most reliable partner. “Hindi mo kailangang hintaying may mangyari bago kumilos,” the agency stressed.

The visual attached to the post debunks the myth that OWWA is only for OFWs in crisis. It portrays a fictional OFW saying, “Hindi ko kailangan ng OWWA. Okay naman ako sa trabaho ko. Wala naman akong problema.” This is countered by the fact that unexpected situations like termination, repatriation, or medical emergencies could arise at any time. In such moments, OWWA becomes a lifeline.

An active OWWA membership grants access to a wide range of welfare benefits including death and disability insurance, medical assistance, scholarship programs for dependents, reintegration services, and on-site support in cases of labor disputes or repatriation. The membership, which costs around PHP 1,250 or USD 25 and is valid for two years, is a small investment in exchange for comprehensive protection.

The agency urges OFWs not to delay enrolling or renewing their OWWA membership, noting that even if things seem stable now, unforeseen events can change everything in an instant. As they put it, “Kahit maayos ka ngayon, mas maayos kapag isa kang active #OWWA member.”
