The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) has issued a fresh warning to all Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) and aspiring jobseekers to remain vigilant against fraudulent employment offers and online promotions that may appear suspiciously perfect or overly easy to obtain.
In a recent advisory posted on its official Facebook page, OWWA urged the public to be critical when encountering opportunities that raise red flags. “Too good to be true? Baka nga scam ‘yan!” the agency emphasized, cautioning kababayans to always verify first before trusting, under the hashtag #MagingMapanuri.
OWWA laid out several warning signs that may indicate a scam:
The process is unusually fast
You are asked to pay fees immediately
There is no confirmation email
The website is unofficial or suspicious
“If you notice even just one of these signs—start doubting,” the agency warned. “Report immediately to the proper authorities to avoid being deceived.”
As part of its broader mandate, OWWA plays a vital role in protecting OFWs from exploitation before deployment, during their time abroad, and after they return to the Philippines. Aside from welfare and reintegration programs, OWWA also supports OFWs through pre-employment orientation seminars, legal aid, and on-site assistance—all designed to educate and shield Filipino workers from abuse and scams.
The agency reminded the public that legitimate job processing usually involves proper documentation, official communication, and regulated timelines. Any process that shortcuts verification and demands upfront payment should immediately raise concern.
To combat growing cases of fraud targeting Filipinos seeking opportunities abroad, OWWA encouraged OFWs to only transact through official government-accredited agencies and platforms.
Filipinos who encounter or suspect employment-related scams are advised to report immediately to OWWA, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), or other appropriate agencies.
