Tulfo backs SC ruling but insists Senate holds final say in impeachment cases

Senator Erwin Tulfo has expressed respect for the Supreme Court’s recent ruling that nullified the articles of impeachment filed against Vice President Sara Duterte, but maintained that the Senate has the exclusive power to try and decide on all impeachment cases under the Constitution.

In a statement released Friday, July 25, Tulfo said he has yet to review the full decision but acknowledged the Supreme Court’s authority to interpret constitutional provisions. “I respect the ruling of the Supreme Court and its interpretation of the constitutional limits that guide the impeachment process,” he said.

However, Tulfo stressed the Senate’s unique responsibility in handling such cases. “The Constitution is clear: the Senate shall have the sole power to try and decide all cases of impeachment. If given the opportunity, I am prepared to discharge our solemn duty and allow the evidence to speak for itself,” he added.

He further emphasized his readiness to listen to valid arguments and public sentiment: “Ako ay handang makinig sa malinaw na ebidensya at sa tunay na tinig ng taumbayan.”

Tulfo also noted that discussions among senators regarding the SC ruling are expected to take place at the start of the following week. “Nirerespeto ko po ang desisyon ng [SC]. I am sure na pag-uusapan namin ito sa Lunes sa Senado kung susundin ba o balewalain ang desisyong ito ng SC,” he said.
