A Facebook post by Mayor Lem Faustino announcing an “E-Ayuda” initiative—offering immediate cash aid via GCash to families affected by flooding—has stirred strong and divided reactions among netizens.
The mechanics of the initiative require families to take a selfie inside their flooded homes, comment their name, barangay, and GCash number on the official post, and share it online for a chance to be selected during a Facebook Live draw.
“Sa diwang ito, nais nating ipakitang mga Calumpiteño na sa pagsasama-sama ng pamilya, babangon tayo nang sama-sama,” Faustino wrote, emphasizing unity in adversity.
However, many netizens criticized the approach, calling it insensitive and exploitative during a time of disaster.
“Ginawang contest ang baha kesa magpump ng mga baradong kanal,” commented Facebook user Sophie Prime, while another, Joms Valderama, said, “Ginawa nyo pang pa raffle yung pag tulung nyo, Tulungan nyo nalng yung nangangailangan!”
Others pointed out the risks of data privacy and the burden placed on victims to gain aid. “Ingatt po sa mga nagseshare ng mobile number nyo sa comments… maraming scammer ang nag-aabang,” Marianne Domingo warned.
Jan Espiritu echoed concerns about privacy and dignity, stating, “While the intention to provide immediate assistance is appreciated… the mechanics requiring flooded families to post selfies and their GCash numbers publicly on social media is both insensitive and exploitative.”
Some reactions were more scathing. “I didn’t realize surviving a typhoon is now a game of luck… disaster relief isn’t a contest, it’s a responsibility,” wrote Naomi Lazado. Another commenter, Gino Monreal Hinolan, accused the campaign of being “a way to gain engagement” rather than genuine public service.
Mayor Faustino has yet to respond to the backlash as the live draw proceeds. Despite the criticism, the post continues to gather shares and comments from hopeful residents looking for assistance.
The initiative’s deadline for entries was set for July 23 at 5:00 PM, with the winners to be announced during a Facebook Live session later that evening.
