PNP chief Torre accepts Baste Duterte’s fistfight challenge—for charity

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Nicolas Torre III has responded to the fistfight challenge thrown by Davao City Acting Mayor Baste Duterte—not with hostility, but with a proposal to turn it into a charitable cause.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Torre said he’s open to facing Duterte in a “charity boxing match,” seeing it as an opportunity to raise funds for victims of recent typhoons and flooding.

“Ang una kong naisip, uy tamang-tama. Maraming kababayan natin ngayon ang nangangailangan ng tulong na naapektuhan ng bagyo at baha,” Torre said, emphasizing that proceeds could go toward relief efforts. “Maganda ‘yan, charity. At least makatulong kami ni Mayor Baste sa ating mga kababayang nasalanta. Sigurado maraming manonood nyan.”

He even suggested a venue and date: “We can do it on Sunday sa Araneta… Seriously, it’s okay.”

The idea stemmed from a vlog uploaded by Duterte on Sunday, where he called out Torre, accusing him of being brave only because of his position. “Pero kung suntukan tayo alam kong makaya kita. But then you’re a coward,” Duterte said in the video.
