Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan is pressing the Philippine government to take swift and decisive action to protect Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) following recent incidents of violence and instability abroad that have endangered Filipino lives.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Pangilinan emphasized that it is the government’s “moral and constitutional obligation to protect the rights of OFWs and ensure their safety wherever they are in the world.”
His call came in the wake of the tragic death of Leah Mosquera, a 49-year-old Filipina caregiver killed in an Iranian missile strike in Israel on June 15, and the harrowing ordeal of 21 Filipino seafarers whose vessel, MV Eternity C, sank in the Red Sea after a Houthi rebel attack. Only eight of the crew have been rescued so far.
“Our OFWs are modern-day heroes,” Pangilinan said, highlighting the sacrifices they make in being away from their families to support their loved ones and sustain the Philippine economy.
He stressed that the government must not wait for tragedies to act. “We cannot afford to be reactive. The government must be proactive in ensuring the safety and security of our workers abroad,” he said.
Pangilinan urged a comprehensive review of deployment policies and stronger monitoring systems for OFWs in conflict-prone areas. He also advocated for better diplomatic engagement, enhanced labor agreements, and increased support for legal and welfare assistance.
Citing data from the Philippine Statistics Authority and the Department of Migrant Workers, Pangilinan noted that around 2.2 million Filipinos are currently employed overseas, contributing billions of dollars in annual remittances. Despite this, many remain exposed to abuse, exploitation, and conflict.
“The dangers our kababayan face abroad further underscore our need to strengthen our economy so they can have the option of returning home and staying with their families,” he added. “This is a challenge to us, as legislators and public servants. We need to build a country where staying is a viable option for everyone.”
