Beginning July 16, senior citizens and persons with disabilities (PWDs) are entitled to a 50-percent fare discount when riding the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 train lines in Metro Manila.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. led the official launch of the expanded fare subsidy at the MRT-3 Santolan-Annapolis station, marking the start of the observance of the 47th National Disability Week.
The move follows a similar initiative for students rolled out in June, all under the administration’s effort to ease commuting costs for vulnerable sectors.
“Our students, persons with disabilities (PWDs), senior citizens truly need our help because their income is very limited,” Marcos said during the launch. “That’s why we thought of this program as something we can do to support our commuters who are PWDs and senior citizens.”
The enhanced discount builds on the existing 20-percent fare reduction mandated for these groups, offering greater relief to approximately 13 million elderly Filipinos and 7 million PWDs.
