Philippine Schools Overseas push for mental wellness and global readiness in education

In the latest episode of The Chairman’s Report aired on IBC 13, Dr. Noemi Formaran, President of the Association of Philippine Schools Overseas (APSO), highlighted the crucial role that mental health and global preparedness play in the education of Filipino students abroad.

The segment, hosted by Secretary Dante “Klink” Ang II and co-produced with the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), focused on how Philippine Schools Overseas (PSOs) are not just institutions of academic learning—but are also deeply committed to shaping well-rounded, emotionally resilient students prepared for international success.

“More than the education, we are after the mental wellness and resiliency of our students,” Dr. Formaran stressed. “Achievement of academic standing is much easier to have than having mental wellness and balance.”

She shared that many PSOs have woven mental health awareness into their academic calendars, implementing activities aimed at strengthening psychological resilience. Teachers are being trained in counseling, special education, and socio-emotional learning to better support students’ well-being.

Dr. Formaran also defended the K-12 program during the discussion, pointing out its significant impact on overseas learners. She cited that without the two additional years in senior high school, Filipino students often faced challenges gaining admission to universities abroad. “Now with Grades 11 and 12, our students are readily accepted in universities abroad without having to take bridging programs,” she said.

While the government is currently reviewing the K-12 curriculum, she emphasized that reforms should focus on trimming overlapping subjects—not scrapping the program altogether. “It is valuable,” she affirmed.

Secretary Ang lauded APSO and CFO for their continued commitment to providing globally competitive, values-based education to Filipinos abroad. “The Philippine Schools Overseas reflect the true spirit of Bagong Pilipinas—empowering Filipinos wherever they are in the world,” he said.
