Taxi driver apologizes after charging nearly P3,000 for 12-kilometer ride in Davao

A taxi driver in Davao City has issued a tearful apology after being accused of collecting nearly P3,000 from an elderly couple for a short trip from the airport to the city’s main bus terminal.

In a report from GMA Regional TV, the driver—whose identity remains undisclosed—claimed he misunderstood the denomination of the bills he received. He said he thought the couple handed him three P100 bills and only realized later that they were actually P1,000 notes.

Caught on video, the driver was seen kneeling on the ground and emotionally embracing the male passenger as he begged for forgiveness.

The incident occurred after the couple traveled around 12 kilometers from Davao International Airport to the Davao City Overland Transport Terminal (DCOTT). One of the passengers said they noticed something unusual during the ride, pointing out that the taxi meter appeared to be ticking too fast.

When they questioned the driver, he allegedly responded, “Wala akong magagawa, ganyan talaga ’yan.”

The viral incident sparked public outrage, with many netizens calling for stricter enforcement of fare regulations and better protection for passengers, especially the elderly.
