An 11-year-old boy who spent nearly his entire life confined to a hospital bed has left behind a powerful legacy after his death by giving three children a second chance at life.
Kim Yeon-woo, born in May 2014 in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, was diagnosed with a severe brainstem disorder just weeks after birth. His condition, which initially presented as facial paralysis after a routine vaccination, quickly worsened. At only two months old, he underwent emergency brain surgery and would rely on a ventilator for the rest of his life.
In 2019, a cardiac arrest drastically reduced his brain function, further complicating his fragile health. On May 24 this year, Kim was declared brain-dead. That same day, his grieving family chose to donate his heart and kidneys, allowing three other children suffering from life-threatening illnesses to live on with renewed hope.
“We hoped that, through someone else’s body, Yeon-woo could experience the things he never had the chance to do, like eating delicious food and laughing,” his mother shared in a statement. “We truly know what it means to care for a child in pain. We sincerely hope the recipients and their families live healthy and happy lives.”
The Korea Organ Donation Agency confirmed the life-saving donations and hailed the family’s decision as an extraordinary act of compassion.
