Dubai Customs intercepts 1.2 tonnes of illegal drugs in major smuggling bust

Authorities in Dubai have intercepted a massive drug smuggling operation after seizing 1.2 tonnes of psychotropic substances in a single shipment, reinforcing the emirate’s strong stance against illegal drug trafficking.

The haul was detected at Dubai’s airport through advanced data analysis, targeted inspection, and the use of cutting-edge security technologies. The discovery highlights the sharp instincts and expertise of Dubai Customs officers, whose vigilance prevented the dangerous substances from reaching the public.

“This achievement reflects Dubai’s leadership globally in fighting smuggling attempts, supported by a fully national inspection team,” said Yasser Al Musalmi, Senior Customs Advisor and Supervisor of the Customs Inspection Sector at Dubai Customs.

The operation is part of the UAE’s broader national strategy to protect society from the threats posed by drug trafficking. It also aligns with global efforts recognized during the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, observed on June 26.

Earlier this year, Dubai Customs also foiled another attempt to smuggle 147.4 kilograms of narcotics and psychotropic substances via one of the emirate’s seaports. In both cases, suspicions raised by customs officials played a critical role in initiating detailed inspections that led to the seizures.
